A true one off from a very wide imagination…
Coming from the mind of writer/director, Simon Cox, INVASION PLANET EARTH, is one of those films that is a true original. It was also made over 17 years, which by anyone’s standards is a long production line! However, the film is set very much in the here and now, but of course, the question does arise, ‘how much’ of it dates from 17 years ago?
The lead actors do not appear to have aged, and the story, like all cool Sci-Fi seems very much about current issues. The special effects are all good considering budget size, and the film is not disjointed in look, or tone. However, what INVASION PLANET EARTH, also has is that old fashioned thing that film makers used to have called, ‘vision.’ It is also made well, even if cheaply. The one slightly disappointing area being sound. Although well mixed, the film would’ve benefitted by a far more up market sound pass, as the ‘location’ sound quite often takes the viewer out of the film, and puts the film clearly in ‘back-bedroom edit’ territory. It’s a shame, but not a deal breaker.
Grab your popcorn, buckle up and enjoy the ride...
For the main part, what stands out is the ambition, and the by and large, skill and ability that have gone into this project to pull it off. With time-frames, flashbacks and reveals a-plenty, the story engages enough to pull the audience in, and there’s a few moments where it surprises and delivers a lot of heart too. It opens where the main character Thomas Dunn, a hard-working, passionate and independent therapy centre manager, finds out that his wife is again pregnant, after tragically losing their first child at just three years old. However, he has also been told that the Therapy centre, which helps people with mental health issues, will have to close. Prepared to fight for his rights, and for those who depend on the centre, as well as keep providing a secure future for his wife and new child, Thomas prepares to take up arms. However, at this moment, strange spaceships arrive, strange things happen, and the world as we know it turns topsy turvey!
To say more would spoil the fun. Complex but not hard to follow, Simon Cox has such a clear grasp of dramatic oomph, and puts such an original twist on the familiar, that INVASION PLANET EARTH, is bound to find an audience. Sure, there are rough edges, and giggly worthy moments, but the film is saved by a true desire not only to entertain, but shout out its message to the world. And, it’s good one, so grab your popcorn, buckle up and enjoy the ride. www.invasionplanetearth.com
