THE LONELY BATTLE OF THOMAS REID is a remarkable, immersive film that was a surprise cinema hit in Ireland last year, winning rapturous critical acclaim and the Best Irish Film Award at the Dublin International Film Festival, as well as playing to packed houses around the country.
The film follows Thomas Reid, a determined Kildare farmer, and his epic and solitary six-year battle that saw him fight his way to the High Court to save his farm from a compulsory purchase order. Reid was devastated when Kildare County Council informed him in 2011 that he would have to sell his farm. The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) planned to buy his land following a compulsory purchase order (CPO). His farm is situated beside Intel's expansive Leixlip campus, on prime territory into which the US multinational could expand their operations.
The IDA made their move, but Reid doggedly took his fight to the Irish Supreme Court, eventually winning his case. His plight captured the attention of the nation… It's a compelling David v Goliath tale which continues today, with Reid’s current planning appeal against Kildare County Council’s decision to give the go ahead to an enormous extension to the new Intel factory beside his lands.
THE LONELY BATTLE OF THOMAS REID which has been described as "the future of documentary" by Variety, "extraordinary" by The Irish Times and "captivating, enraging" by the Sunday Business Post was produced by Luke McManus for FSE Films.
