PORNO
Written by Matt Black & Laurence Vannicelli
Directed by Keola Racela
In a deeply Christian corner of 1992 USA is a mom and pop movie theatre showing FIELD OF DREAMS and ENCINO MAN. It’s run by the kind-hearted, but God-fearing manager Mr Pike. He leaves his Bible loving quintet of employees to have the run of the place after closing time, but a drunk hobo spoils their fun and in the eschewing chaos reveals a secret flea pit porno cinema beneath the one they work in. Down there the walls are lined with salacious sex film titles and to their pleasant surprise they find old reel or two. Temptation is too great, even for this goody two shoes crew. By playing it, they inadvertently unleash a demonic porn star out for lust-filled blood. Each of them is tested and terrified and Mr Pike’s rank hypocrisy is unearthed as they desperately try to work out how to get the evil back in the film can.
The broad humour, nudity (replete with stick on 1970s hairy bush) and the genital gore groans puts PORNO on the slapstick end of the comedy/horror spectrum. The sense of innocence amongst the group is layered on a bit thick at times, but it does ensure the film delivers on the irony that the sexually repressed get sexually liberated in this R-rated, blood soaked spin on WEIRD SCIENCE.
