A Gritty Tale of Ireland’s 16th-Century Pirate Queen
Written and directed by Ciaron Davies, the 3-hour feature stars Fionnuala Collins as Grainne Uaile, the 16th-century Irish pirate queen. Shot on location across Ireland, the film explores her remarkable life as a leader, fighter, and strategist in a male-dominated world.
Director Ciaron Davies commented: "We wanted to create a strong female-driven movie. Grainne is tough, uncompromising, and intelligent, but also feminine and stylish. This is a very empowering female character."
The story spans Grainne's life, from her early days as a clan leader's wife to her career in piracy and battles against English forces, including her meeting with Queen Elizabeth, played by Emilia Ufir. The film is described as gritty and intense, with battle sequences designed to immerse the audience.
The cast includes Sean Simon, Mark Davis, and Ciaron Davies as Richard Bingham, Grainne’s rival, alongside a strong ensemble of Irish talent. Filming was physically demanding, with actors performing their own stunts during cold and challenging conditions.
