Outline: Twin brothers John and George Danes (Harry W Knight & James N Knight), known as "The Generalists," undertake a variety of unusual jobs for an array of unique clients. As they prepare to depart for their latest enigmatic task at Idlewyld House, an unexpected visitor arrives. This individual, aware of their destination to Idlewyld House yet secretive about his source of information, introduces himself only as "the murderer" before vanishing, leaving behind a card bearing the name 'Mr. E' (Kevin Dixon).
At Idlewyld House, their host, Peter Landrigan (Martyn Spendlove), son of the renowned romantic novelist Harriet Landrigan (Nicola Wright), greets them. The Danes inquire if they have been summoned to investigate a murder, but Peter assures them there's no such situation. However, the plot thickens when a guest is discovered deceased at the bottom of the stairs, and the self-proclaimed murderer is missing, his true identity still a mystery.
Bestselling Author Sophie Hannah, Brings a Unique Blend of Crime Fiction and Musical to Cinema
Sophie Hannah says: “This began life as a school play, written by me and my friend Annette Armitage, a musical genius. I combined two of my favourite interests - crime fiction and musicals - to create something I truly loved,” Hannah explains. One of the film's defining aspects is its exploration of the often underestimated and misunderstood world of teenagers, a theme close to Hannah's heart.
The movie features a diverse cast of both adults and children, with one of the crime-solving heroes, Oscar Landrigan, a rebellious schoolboy, inspired by and based on Hannah’s son, Guy, who originally played the character in the school play.
"After seeing a preview of the movie, I could not love this adaptation more," Hannah expresses with enthusiasm. "It has all the appeal and quirky charm of a good old-fashioned mystery yarn, making it a hugely enjoyable movie for the whole family."
Sophie Hannah is not only an acclaimed author of crime fiction but also the chosen writer for new Poirot novels, continuing Agatha Christie's legacy. Her books, translated into numerous languages, have sold millions of copies worldwide. She recently won the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association ‘Dagger in the Library' Award for her contribution to crime fiction. Her next Poirot novel, Hercule Poirot’s Silent Night, is set to be published in October 2023.
'THE MYSTERY OF MR E', blending crime fiction's intrigue with the vivacity of a musical, is a testament to Hannah's versatile storytelling and is set to captivate audiences of all ages.
