British Film Review - Janapar
Like cycling uphill, with flat tyres and a heavy rucksack of clichés on ones back, Janapar, offers nothing new.
A documentary filmed by Tom Allen, as he decided to bicycle around the world. While it is a sweet concept, it is one that is well trammelled with many similar examples even in contemporary media, such as Idiot Abroad (a Ricky Gervais project). Janapar, offers all that could be anticipated in a documentary of a man cycling round foreign countries with a blend of beautiful scenery, charming snippets of local cultures and self-indulgent narration. However, despite the unoriginal offerings, the documentary is rescued by Tom’s love on a bike, Tenny. Tenny’s energy and charm make the scenes that she is involved in uplifting and interesting and their relationship is certainly special.
A documentary that might as well have set off with a puncture, as it followed the same track that has been explored for centuries, with bored wealthy men setting off on colonial-esque journeys of self-discovery and happening upon love. Tom does do it nicely - and he’d be good to go for a pint with.
